Gift Aid donations

You can increase the value of donations to Macmillan by signing a charity Gift Aid declaration.

For every £1 people donate to us, we can claim an extra 25p from the government in Gift Aid.

Since the money you raise at your event is made up of lots of different people’s donations, we need to be able to claim Gift Aid from each of these using the entries on the form.

If everyone claimed Gift Aid on their coffee morning donations, we could raise an extra £2 million! That kind of money could pay for a brand new oncology and outpatient unit in a hospital.

Use the Gift Aid form in your pack or download it, and encourage people to fill in their details. And don’t forget to put your name and the address where your coffee morning was registered on the bottom too.

Do I have to use the Gift Aid form you’ve provided?

Yes please. We have tried to provide you with a form that helps you and us claim Gift Aid properly. Please do not design your own, as the Gift Aid form is a legal document and must include certain information to be valid.

Can I save time and fill it in for my guests?

No. Please do not fill in donation details on behalf of your guests. For legal reasons, the Gift Aid declaration needs to be in the handwriting of the person ticking the box. For the same reason all details need to be handwritten and not typed.

Can I Gift Aid if I don't pay tax?

Macmillan can reclaim tax on all donations, even if you are not employed, providing you’re paying tax any of the following:

  • Personal or occupational pension
  • Stocks and shares
  • Bank and building society savings accounts
  • Rental income
  • Overseas and UK investment dividends.
  • If you pay tax on a pension plan or savings account or pay capital gains tax if you sell property or shares, you are also still eligible for Gift Aid.
Can Gift Aid be claimed on all the money I raise?

Gift Aid can only be claimed on gifts of money from individuals where no reward is received in return for making a donation. For example, it can’t be claimed on money given for things like raffles, where there’s a prize.

If the donation amounts for the whole form are all the same (e.g. £1.50) they may be considered payments for goods received or competition entries and therefore not eligible.

The Gift Aid form is for individual donations only so please avoid recording the total amount you have raised from your event on the form. For example, if you raise an amazing £100 at your event, you can’t send in a form with your name and £100 in the amount donated box.

However, there is no upper or lower limit to Gift Aid. We can reclaim the tax on any amount, so you and your guests can fill in the Gift Aid form for any individual donation made, large or small.

What details do I need to fill in?

We’ll need each person’s name, home address, postcode and donation amount. It must be a home address, as Gift Aid cannot be claimed if you use a work address.

The Gift Aid tick box also has to be ticked (see the two samples filled in at the top of the Gift Aid form). i.e. 'Tick this box if you are a UK taxpayer.'
